How healthcare works here, briefly
Something most new residents ask, and nobody explains. You don’t need a GP referral — physiotherapy is a direct-access healthcare profession in Spain, so you can book yourself.
Physiotherapists are registered. In the Valencian Region they must belong to the official College of Physiotherapists, which keeps a public register you can check.
Bring your paperwork. If you have had surgery or a scan, in Spain or back home, bring the report. It saves a session’s worth of guesswork.
The three approaches we use
Structural
Joints and musculature — back, neck, shoulder, hip. The approach that combines most often with the rest of physiotherapy.
Visceral
Gentle hands-on work on abdominal tissue mobility and wall tension. A complement to treatment, never a digestive treatment in itself.
Cranial
Very gentle work on the head and cervical spine, used for tension patterns, cervicogenic headache and jaw dysfunction.
How we work
- Assessment first, always. History and movement examination.
- We find the source, which often isn’t where it hurts.
- We explain what we found and what we suggest, in plain English.
- Only then do we treat.
- You leave with something to do at home.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. Physiotherapy is direct-access in Spain — you can book yourself. If the assessment turns up something that belongs with a doctor, we will tell you and point you in the right direction.
Do you actually speak English, or just a few words?
We treat in English, Spanish and German. You will be able to describe your pain and understand your treatment plan without a translator.
Will my private health insurance cover it?
That depends entirely on your policy — cover varies widely, especially with international insurers. We can provide an invoice for you to claim. Check with your provider before your first session.
Is osteopathy regulated in Spain?
Osteopathy itself is not a separate regulated profession here. At FISIOSTER it is applied by a registered physiotherapist within the scope of physiotherapy, which is regulated and requires membership of the official College. That is your safeguard.
How many sessions will I need?
Nobody honest will give you a number over the phone. We will give you an estimate after the first assessment and review it as we go — if there is no progress, we change approach or refer you on.
